Attested: Ptolemy 2,3,3 Δαμνονιον το και Οκρινον ακρον
Where: Lizard peninsula
Name Origin: Latin damno ‘to cause harm’ plus ocris ‘stony or rugged mountain’ (or Greek δαμναω ‘to subdue, conquer’ plus οκρις ‘jagged point’) sounds like a fair description of the Lizard Peninsula, which “is the biggest trap for shipping in British waters, jutting into the Channel to welcome mariners home to England, and to sink them by the thousand on its reefs and cliffs.”
Notes: R&S emended this name by replacing A with U, to fit Celticist theories about the Dumnonii. Unnecessary.
