Μεγας λιμην

Attested:  Ptolemy 2,3,4 Μεγας λιμην

Where:  Portsmouth Harbour, with its entrance at SZ627993.  Most commentators have followed R&S in wrongly suggesting Spithead, between the Isle of Wight and the mainland.  The whole Solent may be ideal for anchoring great lines of modern warships in fine weather, but it is definitely not a harbour.

Name origin:  Greek for ‘great harbour’.
