Attested: Ptolemy 2,3,4 and 2,3,33 Μεγας λιμην
Where: Portsmouth Harbour, with its entrance at SZ627993. Most commentators have followed Rivet & Smith in suggesting Spithead, between the Isle of Wight and the mainland, but although the whole Solent may be ideal for anchoring great lines of modern warships in fine weather, it is definitely not a harbour.
Name origin: Greek for ‘great harbour’.
